Community Events

One of the Program Division’s favorite aspects of what we do is to create fun and engaging events for the residents of our community.  Nothing pleases us more than seeing our hard work and preparations culminate in families spending quality time having fun together, sharing smiles and laughter.  Our department is proud to say that we offer, on average, around 60 Community Events per year in all corners of Williamson County.  Annual favorites include Father & Daughter Dances, Touch-A-Truck, Egg Hunts, Breakfast with Santa, Pool Parties, Halloween Events and many more. Our summer production for the Rising Stars this year is Disney’s Aladdin JR. which is based on the 1992 Academy-Award®-winning film and the 2014 hit Broadway show about the “diamond in the rough” street rat who learns that his true worth lies deep within. The story you know and love has been given the royal treatment! Aladdin and his three friends, Babkak, Omar, and Kassim, are down on their luck until Aladdin discovers a magic lamp and the Genie who has the power to grant three wishes. Wanting to earn the respect of the princess, Jasmine, Aladdin embarks on an adventure that will test his will and his moral character. Please join us in enjoying the talents of these young performers, ages 5 through 8th grade.

* This play will include our second offering of a sensory-friendly play, with our Saturday 3pm performance of Aladdin, Jr. This performance is designed to create a more comfortable experience for those with sensitivity to sensory input and their families. Please feel free to bring comforting objects and noise-reducing headphones. We will also have a sign language interpreter. Click HERE  for more information on our sensory-friendly performances and a link to a social story to share with your child.

Pinocchio Synopsis: Geppetto fashioned the puppet in the image of a small boy. Even as the lonely and kind woodcarver worked far into the night, old Geppetto was not aware that the wood under the chisel had come from the trunk of an enchanted tree. But the Blue Fairy was aware, as she watched from afar and gave to that puppet the gift of life. Thus begins the Missoula Children's Theatre adaptation of one of the most beloved of all children’s stories–PINOCCHIO. Join our wooden-head as he dances with Geppetto’s charming toys, travels the road to Pleasure Isle with Candlewick and his Crew, and is swindled by the unsavory Fox and Cat. After escaping the clutches of the evil puppet master, Stromboli, Pinocchio finds himself in trouble once more–this time swallowed by a monstrous whale. Very scary stuff! As Geppetto and the friendly Urchins spin their magical tale, we learn with Pinocchio that there are no shortcuts on the road to becoming a real, live boy.

Peter and Wendy Synopsis: When Captain Hook sends his right-hand man Smee on a quest to capture Peter Pan, it’s seemingly business as usual…at first. Little does Hook realize what fantastic adventures await him and his pirate posse in their search for the elusive Peter Pan. Mistaken identities, ever-morphing clouds, a classy crocodile, some very lost boys, and a fickle shadow all add to the mayhem. Meanwhile, Mr. and Mrs. Darling embark on a quest of their own and find themselves trekking everywhere from Hawaii to the North Pole in search of their three missing children. With help from the earth-friendly Neverlanders, exotic Neverland creatures, and faithful Tinker Bell, the Darling children are found, disputes are ultimately resolved, and everyone – including Captain Hook – finds a place where they truly belong.

Our first Straight to the Stars production will be Cheaper by the Dozen, which is based on the true story of the Gilbreth family. The Gilbreth’s inventor father, who is well-known for bringing better efficiency to factories, keeps his family of twelve children running just as efficiently and the results of being part of the grand experiment are terribly embarrassing, funny and—it must be admitted— extremely effective! To oldest daughter Anne, the chief effect seems to be that of making the children seem ridiculous to everyone else at school— especially to the boys! Dad pushes ahead with better organization for his large and delightful family, such as putting up a chart for the children to initial after completing each household task, using a rung as an imaginary bathtub to demonstrate how to take a really efficient bath and appointing a utilities officer to levy fines on wasters of electricity. While the situations are often uproarious, there's a serious reason that Dad is keeping secret. The children don't understand the reasons and oldest daughter Anne rebels. Dad and Anne are both miserable at the lack of understanding between them. Then in a deft and moving scene, Dad becomes aware of how much Anne has grown up.

Straight to the Stars is our Youth Theatre group for high school aged actors producing straight (non-musical) plays.

Adapted by Christopher Sergel. From the book by Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. Produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock, Illinois.
